Gov't to Invest W5 Tln to Create Science Belt

The Education, Science and Technology Ministry has finalized a timetable on the creation of an international science and business belt.

The ministry held a meeting Friday and decided the science belt project would be carried out from 2012 to 2017.

The belt will be based in the Sindong and Dungok districts in Daejon City, which total an area of three-point-seven million square meters.

A basic science research center will be built south of Dungok, and the Korea Rare Isotope Accelerator will be located north of Sindong.

Housing, schools and industrial facilities will be located between the research center and the accelerator.

The ministry has also appointed Seoul National University Professor Kim Sun-kee as chief of the accelerator's construction.

Close to five-point-two trillion won in total will be invested in the science belt. The basic science research center will be completed by 2015 and the accelerator by 2017.
