Korean Traditional Archery Growing in Popularity

Written: 2011-09-14 13:00:25Updated: 2011-09-14 18:07:21

The greatest appeal of Korean traditional archery, Gukgung, is that it helps train the mind as well as the body.

Unlike modern archery, taking aim in Gukgung is done with the mind.

The distance between the archer and the target is one-hundred-45 meters, longer than the maximum 90 meters in modern archery, but the arrow reaches the target without difficulty.

Bows can be selected depending on the arm strength of the archer, meaning anyone can try Gungdo, or the art of Gukgung.

There are more than 350 Gungdo ranges throughout the nation. Basic skills can be learned in two months and visitors are steadily increasing as a result.

Korean traditional archery is establishing its presence as a new sport for physical and mental training.
