The nationwide heatwave has continued into September as temperatures rose to a record 35-point-nine degrees Celsius in Milyang, South Gyeongsang Province on Thursday.
Afternoon highs reached around 35 degrees Celsius in most southern regions Thursday and hit 35-and-a-half degrees in Daegu and 35 degrees in Goheung, South Jeolla Province. Temperatures rose to 33-point-three degrees in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province, 32-point-seven degrees in Bueyo, South Chuncheong and 31 degrees in Seoul.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said that the high atmospheric pressure as well as the sunny weather pushed up the temperatures.
The heat wave is expected to continue on Friday in Gyeonggi and inland areas of Chungcheong and southern provinces, with the mercury rising to 33 degrees Celsius. But the temperatures are likely to drop on Saturday.
