The air quality in the main Daegu Stadium and the marathon course for the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, scheduled to be held in Daegu, have been found to be clean. Pollutant levels are reportedly about half of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) standards.
The Public Health and Environment Institute of Daegu Metropolitan City measured the air quality from August fifth to eleventh. The institute found that particulate matter and ultrafine particle levels, which are commonly found at track and field events, are substantially below WHO guidelines in locations where the athletes will compete.
Particulate matter (PM-10) levels around the Daegu stadium were found to be half those of WHO guidelines.
Other pollutants, including nitrogen monoxide and carbon monoxide levels, were also well below those of WHO guidelines.
Levels of ultrafine particles, which are known to be more harmful to the human body than particulate matter, was also well below the standards set forth by the WHO, making the air quality suitable for competition.
