Park Advances to Semifinals for 200m Freestyle Event

South Korean swimmer Park Tae-hwan has advanced to the semifinals in the 200-meter freestyle event at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai.

Park finished fourth in the preliminaries with a time of one minute and 46-point-63 seconds during the race held at the Oriental Sports Center on Monday.

Paul Biedermann of Germany took first with a time of one minute and 46-point-56 seconds. Biedermann is the current 200-meter freestyle world record holder with a time of one minute and 42 seconds.

Park won the gold medal in the 200-meter freestyle event at the Guangzhou Asian Games last year setting a record in Asia with a time of one minute and 44-point-80 seconds.

The semifinals for the 200-meter freestyle event will begin at 7:57 p.m. Monday (KST). The finals will be held on Tuesday afternoon with eight swimmers competing.
