The government has come up with different development plans for each science and technology university or institute in the nation’s four major cities—Daejeon, Gwangju, Daegu and Ulsan.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced on Thursday that under the plans, it will have the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology focus on the development of core technologies that would lead the market.
The ministry will foster the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology to develop solar technologies, including solar cells, while having Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology specialize in brain science and IT-based medical technologies.
The government will direct Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology to focus its research on secondary battery and graphene.
The ministry explained that the plans are aimed at encouraging the local science institutes and universities to secure research and development capabilities for local industries. It added that the plans will also help the institutes and universities house basic science research organizations for the government’s planned science and business belt project while making the regions global research hubs.
