Pyeongchang Wins Winter Olympics Bid

Pyeongchang has been selected as the host of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Pyeongchang gained the majority of votes in the first round of voting at the International Olympic Committee's general assembly in Durban, South Africa on Wednesday, local time. Pyeongchang received 63 of the 95 votes cast. Germany’s Munich won 25 votes while the French city of Annecy garnered just seven votes.

The Gangwon Province county lost two previous bids to host the Winter Games, coming up short to Canada’s Vancouver in 2010 and Russia’s Sochi in 2014.

The 2018 Winter Games will be the first time in 30 years for South Korea to host an Olympic event. Seoul hosted the Summer Olympics in 1988.

Now that Pyeongchang has won its bid, South Korea will become the second nation in Asia after Japan to host the Winter Games.

The Olympic victory will also make South Korea the sixth nation in the world to host the world’s top four sports events, including the Summer and Winter Olympics, the FIFA World Cup and the World Championships in Athletics.
