Pyeongchang Aiming to Win Majority Vote in First Round

Pyeongchang’s Winter Olympic bid committee is aiming to secure a majority vote in the first round when ballots are cast Wednesday evening in Durban, South Africa to determine the host of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

The International Olympic Committee will convene a general assembly to vote on the future host nation following final presentations by three candidates.

Out of the committee’s 110 members, its president, Jacques Rogge, and those who represent the three countries competing to host the winter games will not take part in the voting. Around 95 IOC members are expected to cast ballots.

In the event none of the three cities wins a majority of IOC member votes in the first round, the host will be decided in a runoff.

Pyeongchang previously lost bids to host the winter sports games in 2010 and 2014. The Gangwon Province county lost both times by slim margins in the second rounds.
