Korean Seas, Marine Life Unaffected by Japan Nuke Crisis

Normal levels of radioactive materials have been reported in the sea water and in marine organisms surrounding the Korean Peninsula.

The Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety took ten water samples from the East and Yellow Sea and from waters south of the peninsula in May and measured the radiation levels. The test results show that the nuclear power plant crisis in Japan has not affected Korean waters.

The institute says that radioactive cesium-137 and plutonium were detected in normal levels. Radioactive iodine and radioactive cesium-134 were not detected at all.

Radiation testing was also conducted on nineteen different fish, clam and seaweed products. Minute amounts of radioactive cesium were found in cod and hairtail and regular levels of the same substance were found in certain types of red algae.
