The government will announce Monday the final candidate site for building a global science and business belt town. This seven year project will cost some three-and-a-half trillion won or some three-point-two billion dollars.
The Science and Technology Ministry will hold a series of meetings in the morning and review the evaluation results of five candidate sites and select the winner. The announcement is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. and Daejon City, which scored the highest in last month's first evaluation, is expected to come out on top.
Daejon is home to a cluster of science think tanks including the Daedeok Research Complex. It also received high points for accessibility and residential environment for foreigners.
If Daejon is chosen, the National Basic Science Institute headquarters is expected to open there and other key facilities including particle accelerators will also be built. The nearby areas of Osong and Sejong City will support the science belt through industrial, financial and educational functions.
