Pyeongchang of Gangwon Province has received good news concerning its bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.
The IOC released the on-site inspections results of Pyeongchang, South Korea, Munich, Germany and Annecy, France on Tuesday afternoon. Major international news outlets have reported that all three candidate cities are well prepared, but that Pyeongchang is seen as the front-runner.
Pyeongchang underwent the inspection in February this year. The IOC was apparently satisfied with the convenience of transportation and proximity of stadiums, which would allow 80 percent of participants to reach their playing venues in only 10 minutes.
Pyeongchang residents’ enthusiastic support for the hosting was also taken into consideration. More than 90 percent of its people are supporting Pyeongchang’s bid while Munich has only 60 percent support from its residents and Annecy has local support from just 50 percent.
The IOC will decide on the host city during a general assembly meeting in South Africa in July.
