Lee Shin-mi won Korea's first gold medal of the 14th Asian Games in the individual sabre duel by defeating teammate Lee Gyu-young at Gangseo Gymnasium in Busan Monday. The swordswoman bested her opponent 15-to-8 in the final round after having moved past Chiyo Ogawa of Japan in the quarterfinals. She also knocked out Tan Xue of China in the semifinals.
Madok Hisagae of Japan won the bronze by coming up from behind against Tan Xue. The fencing competition continues with the women's epee individual and men's sabre individual Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Jo Su-hee added a second gold medal to the host country's tally as she defeated Japan's Mizuho Matsuzaki in the 78 kilogram women's judo category final held at Gudeok Gymnasium Monday. Jo won by a half point after leading Matsuzaki throughout the whole match.
The 21-year-old Yong-In University student is considered an influential judo-player leading the country's female judo circle whose competitive power has weakened due to generation change.
South Korea is placed at third place after China and Japan.
