Radioactive Iodine Found in Rainwater in 7 Regions

Radioactive iodine has been found in rainwater taken from seven regions around the country on Sunday.

The Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety said on Monday that the radioactive substance was detected in rainwater from Cheongju, Gunsan, Gwangju, Daejeon, Daegu, Busan and Jeju, locations where it rained over the weekend.

The highest level was found in Cheongju at 1.06 becquerels of iodine per liter.

The institute, however, said that the figure is a mere one sixtieth of the level that amounts to a human’s yearly allowance to radiation exposure.

Radioactive iodine was also found in the air at 12 regions nationwide, while radioactive cesium was detected in seven areas, including Daejeon and Gunsan.

Radioactive xenon, which is being measured only in Gangwon Province, marked 0.454 becquerel per cubic meter, lower than the previous day.
