IOC Team Wraps up Inspection of Pyeongchang

An International Olympic Committee delegation has completed its inspection of Pyeonghchang’s bid to win the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

The Pyeongchang bidding committee gave presentations on four topics, including safety and security, doping control, media operations, and technology to the IOC delegation Saturday, the last day of the on-site inspection.

In the presentation, the bidding committee said that it will establish a system led by the prime minister to ensure a safe winter Olympics if it wins the bid.

The bidding committee also announced plans to offer convenient and quality medical service to participants in the Winter Olympics, including a plan to build a hospital that can be accessed from any Olympic facility within 30 minutes.

In a closing news conference, the head of the 14-member IOC evaluation team Gunilla Lindberg said that during four days of inspections she has seen great progress from four years ago.

She also said her delegation could see strong support from the South Korean government and residents of Gangwon Province for Pyeongchang's bid.

However, she sidestepped questions about the possibility of Pyeongchang hosting the Winter Games, saying that the delegation's job is not to compare bidding cities.

The IOC inspection team will leave South Korea on Sunday for Munich of Germany, another city competing to win the rights to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The inspection team will brief the IOC on the results of its inspections of bidding cities from May 18th in Lausanne, Switzerland. The IOC will select the host city of the 2018 Winter Olympics on July sixth in Durban, South Africa.
