South Korea announced plans on Wednesday to build its second research base in Antarctica.

The new base, tentatively named the “Jang Bogo Antarctic Research Station,” will be capable of withstanding winds blowing at 65 meters per second and will run, in part, on solar power.

Aboard the nation’s first icebreaker “Araon,” a team of ten architects will leave for Antarctica on Thursday to survey the candidate site for the research station for 13 days. The team will arrive in Terra Nova Bay early next month.

The government plans to draw up a design in the first half of this year and complete the construction of the base by March of 2014 in Terra Nova near the Ross Sea.

South Korea’s first Antarctic research base, the King Sejong Station, is located on King George Island.
