Green Cross to Develop Antibiotics for Super Bacteria

Local drug producer Green Cross announced plans on Friday to develop antibiotics to cure "super bacteria,” which are bacteria that are resistant to almost all antibiotics.

The Green Cross said that it will sign an agreement with a Japanese pharmaceutical company early next year to jointly develop drugs to treat methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

The MRSA virus has a high fatality rate, with an annual average of 20-thousand out of 100-thousand infected patients dying in the United States. The virus is different from the NDM-1 CRE (Carbapenem Resistant Enterobacteriaceae) virus recently confirmed in two patients in South Korea.
