Hyundai Consortium Selected to Build 2nd Antarctic Base

The government has selected a consortium led by Hyundai Engineering and Construction to build South Korea’s second base in Antarctica.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said Monday that it selected the consortium after reviewing a number of bids for the construction of the Jang Bogo Antarctic Research Station.

The research station will be built on a plot of land measuring some 43-hundred square meters and will have the capacity to withstand temperatures of 40 degrees below zero and winds blowing at 65 meters per second.

The ministry plans to carry out an on-site study early next year and complete the construction of the base by 2014 in Terra Nova near the Ross Sea.
