'S.Korea Actively Investing in Science, Innovation'

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology says South Korea is one of the more active countries in the world in terms of investing in science, technology and innovation.

The ministry said Monday that the recent assessment was made in the 2010 UNESCO Science Report.

According to the report, South Korea’s world share of gross domestic product (GDP) stood at one-point-nine percent in 2007 while its world share of gross domestic expenditures on research and development stood at three-point-six percent.

In particular, the report said South Korea’s gross domestic expenditures on research and development-per-GDP ratio was the second highest among G20 member countries after Japan.

The report also said that from 2002 to 2007, the share of business investment in research and development in GDP rose sharply in Japan, China and Singapore, with a particularly steep curve in South Korea.
