A small local firm says it has successfully developed a technology to desalinate water using solar energy.

Kones Corporation said Wednesday that it successfully developed a commercialization model for a desalination plant that will use solar energy gathered using a high-efficiency solar collector to desalinate sea water.

The new technology is drawing attention as it could drastically cut operating and maintenance costs and could also provide a resolution to water shortage problems on remote islands and in mountainous regions.
