North Korea on Friday officially notified South Korea of its participation in the Sept. 29-Oct. 14 Busan Asian Games. The official said the socialist country also proposed the South to hold a working-level meeting at the North's Mount Geumgang Aug. 17-20 to discuss details involving its participation in the Asiad. The official said the notification and proposal were made in a letter from Pak Myong-chol, chairman of the North's Olympic Committee, to Busan Asiad Organizing Committee Chairman Chung Soon-taek, adding that the letter was conveyed via liaison officers at the truce village of Panmunjom in the afternoon. Pak said in the letter that as agreed at the Aug. 4 (inter-Korean) working-level contact at Mount Geumgang for the seventh minister-level talks, we (the North) officially inform you (the South) of our athletes' participation in the 14th Busan Asian Games. He said we believe it is needed for the two sides to meet as early as possible to discuss details, including our delegation's participation and obtaining of the Asiad flame from Mount Paekdu.
