Domestic Stem Cell Technology Adopted as Int’l Standard

A domestically developed stem cell differentiation technology has been adopted as an international standard.

According to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the adoption was made in a meeting of the International Stem Cell Forum that was held in Britain last month.

Therefore, researchers worldwide will use the South Korean technology when differentiating stem cells for use in other projects.

A domestic research team lead by medical professor Kim Dong-wook at Yonsei University added two special signal inhibitors in the process of cultivating embryonic stem cells to differentiate those stem cells into nerve cells.

Kim says his team plans to use the nerve cells in a clinical test on Parkinson’s disease patients.
