The International Electrotechnical Commission says South Korea has proposed the largest number of international standards in the field of information technology (IT) in the last year.

The commission said during a general meeting held recently in the U.S. city of Seattle that South Korea proposed a total of 24 international standards in the IT area from the fourth quarter of last year through the third quarter of this year.

The Knowledge and Economy Ministry’s Korean Agency for Technology and Standards said the number of international standards proposed by each country helps evaluate countries’ market shares and determines which countries are leaders in terms of electronic standards.

South Korea proposed just two standards at the international commission’s meeting in 2002.

Sixty percent of international standards the nation proposed were in the areas of semiconductors, displays and lighting. The agency said the nation will work to suggest more standards in the fields of energy, smart grids and electric cars.
