Skater Kim Selects Peter Oppegard as New Coach

Olympic figure skating gold medalist Kim Yu-na has selected former pair figure skater Peter Oppegard as her new coach, two months after ending her association with previous coach Brian Orser.

Kim introduced her new coach on Wednesday during a news conference in Los Angeles.

Oppegard won a bronze medal at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics in pair skating with Jill Watson. Oppegard and Watson are three-time U.S. national champions and were inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2004.

Oppegard is also the brother-in-law of Kim’s idol and U.S. skating legend Michelle Kwan.

He will help Kim train for the 2011 World Figure Skating Championships that take place next March.
