'Mount Baekdu Eruption to Cause Huge Flood'

A minor opposition lawmaker has warned that a volcanic eruption on Mount Baekdu in North Korea will cause a massive flood that will inundate regions near the Yalu and Tumen rivers.

Liberty Forward Party lawmaker Lee Myung-soo quoted Sunday a report by the National Emergency Management Agency as saying an eruption will cause about two billion tons of water at the crater lake Cheonji at the peak to overflow. He says this will inundate the nearby areas of the Tumen, Yalu and Songhua rivers as well as other regions in North Korea.

The report says volcanic ash from the eruption will reach the North Korean provinces of Yanggang and North Hamgyeong and China's Jilin Province, though it will not directly affect South Korea.

Lee urged the South's Korea Meteorological Administration and the Foreign Ministry to research and prepare for a potential eruption in cooperation with other related ministries.
