U-17 Women Edge Out Japan to Win World Cup

South Korea has defeated Japan 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out to win the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup for the first time.

On Sunday morning (KST) at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, the two teams were tied 3-3 after regulation and extra time.

The sturdy and speedy Taegeuk Ladies led by coach Choi Duck-joo won South Korea's first global soccer tournament organized by FIFA since the sport was introduced to their country in 1882.

Lee Jung-eun opened the scoring for South Korea in the sixth minute with a 23-meter shot into the top corner of the net. Hikaru Naomoto scored an equalizer for Japan five minutes later.

Kim A-reum and Lee So-dam added a goal each for their team in the 46th and 79th minutes. The game went to a penalty shoot-out after a scoreless extra time.

The two teams were tied 4-4 in the nail-biting shoot-out, but Jang Sel-gi's shot gave South Korea a dramatic 5-4 victory and her country's first FIFA title for any age category or gender.

South Korea's Yeo Min-ji finished the tournament with eight goals and three assists to claim the Golden Ball award as the World Cup's best player and the Golden Boot (Golden Shoe) award as top scorer.

In the third-place game, 2008 champion North Korea lost to Spain, 1-0.
