S.Korea to Strengthen Monitoring of Super Bacteria

Health authorities will establish and operate a system to monitor “super bacteria,” which are bacteria that are resistant to almost all antibiotics.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that it is working on a bill under which five super bacteria will be designated as germs that cause communicable diseases.

The viruses include staphylococcus aureus resistant to methicillin, enterococci resistant to vancomycin and intestinal bacteria resistant to carbapenems.

The monitoring system will go into operation in late December.

The measure follows the recent spread of intestinal bacteria resistant to carbapenems in India and Pakistan.
