“Ocean Buoys” To Forecast Accessibility of Dokdo Islets

Facilities that predict the height of waves in waters off the Dokdo islets in the East Sea have been installed. This will enable ships to know if they can dock at Dokdo before they depart from the mainland.

The Korea Meteorological Administration installed the buoys at a location some 200 kilometers from the Dokdo pier. The instruments measure the height, direction and temperature of waves in the waters off the Dokdo Islets.

The marine measurement information is available by dialing 131. As the data will make it possible to know if ships can berth at Dokdo before they set off, schedules for the islets’ tourists may vary.

When the Dokdo islets were first opened to the public in 2005, some 40-thousand tourists visited. To date, the number of visitors has more than tripled over the past five years.
