Cho Appointed New Nat'l Soccer Team Coach

Gyeongnam FC coach Cho Kwang-rae has officially been named the next coach of the national soccer team.

The Korea Football Association’s technical committee held a meeting on Wednesday to appoint Cho to the new post.

Cho was born in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, and graduated from Jinju High School and Yonsei University. He was a star player on the national soccer team during the 1970s and 80s.

Once he retired, Cho went on to coach the Anyang LG Cheetahs, now known as FC Seoul. He led the team to the K-League title in 2000. Cho was also a key figure in discovering young soccer talents, including Lee Chung-yong.

The head of the Korea Football Association’s technical committee, Lee Hoi-taek, said that although Cho’s term has been set at two years, the association plans to have Cho lead the team until the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
