Outdoor Cheering Planned Nationwide for Taegeuk Warriors

Street cheering is planned across the country on Saturday night, when South Korea’s national soccer team plays against Uruguay in the second round of the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament.

Some 300-thousand people are expected to turn up to cheer for the Taegeuk Warriors at Seoul Plaza, the longtime heart of street cheering, as well as in nearby Taepyeong-ro and Gwanghwamun.

In addition, popular singers will give celebratory performances beginning two hours before the match at World Cup Stadium and at riverside parks located along the Han River. They are a show of support for the South Korean team to help them advance to the quarterfinals.

Nationwide, more than two million people are expected to cheer for the soccer team outdoors on Saturday night.

Some 430-thousand fans cheered outdoors during the Nigeria-South Korea match on June 23rd, which started at 3:30 a.m. Korea time. Excitement caused by the team's first-ever advance to a World Cup second round on foreign soil has energized fans. In addition, the match's Saturday night start should result in record numbers of people taking to the streets to express their support.
