Joint Committee to Probe Cause of Failed Rocket Launch

South Korea and Russia will establish a joint committee next week to investigate what caused the Naro space rocket to explode during its ascent earlier on Thursday.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology said Friday that South Korea and Russia will launch a joint committee in line with a previous bilateral agreement, adding that the committee’s first meeting will take place on Monday.

The joint committee will determine the cause of the rocket’s failure during the launch. If the committee concludes that Russia was responsible for the failure, South Korea will be able to make a third attempt to launch its first space rocket.

Meanwhile, the Navy has recovered debris that may be part of the Naro from waters south of Jeju Island earlier on Thursday.

The Korea Aerospace Research Institute, which obtained the debris on Friday, plans to bring the wreckage to the Naro Space Center soon.
