S.K. Hospital More Successful than U.S. in Treating Stomach Cancer

A joint South Korea-U.S. study has found that Korean medical teams are more successful than their American counterparts when it comes to successfully treating stomach cancer.

The cancer institute at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital compared its stomach cancer surgery outcomes with those at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

The study found that the five-year survival rate, which is a standard measure of cancer recovery, was 81 percent at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, but just 58 percent at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.

In addition, Seoul St. Mary's Hospital had a 10 percent lower rate of complications from surgery, and a lower rate of deaths occurring during surgery.

The results of the study were published in the April issue of “Annals of Surgery,” the world's most highly referenced surgery journal.
