Sprinter Kim Gook-young has broken South Korea's 31-year-old record for the 100 meters.

During the preliminaries at the National Athletics Championships in Daegu, Kim put up a mark of 10.31 seconds in the 100 meters, shedding 0.03 seconds from the country's record of 10.34 seconds set in 1979 by Seo Mal-ku.

Then, later in the day in the men's semifinals, Kim broke his own record when he crossed the finish line at 10.23 seconds.

Two other South Koreans also bettered Seo’s long-standing record during the semifinals.
