Success Reported for Artificial Rain Experiment

Written: 2010-05-23 12:42:51Updated: 2010-05-23 12:55:54

The Korea Meteorological Administration has conducted a successful artificial rain experiment in the Seoul metropolitan area.

This is expected to help produce rain to clean up air pollutants such as in yellow sandstorms that often plague the country in spring.

To make artificial rain, substances are injected into saturated clouds under a process called seeding to induce the coagulation of raindrops. The technology has a higher success rate in mountainous regions but is also usable in plains.

The weather agency says one to two millimeters of rain fell in Pyeongtaek and Anseong in Gyeonggi Province in its April 23rd experiment. Officials say they confirmed the precipitation using radar and automatic measuring equipment.
