South Korean golfer Shin Ji-yai has become the first Asian to be ranked number one by the LPGA.

The 22-year-old Shin beat out Mexico's Lorena Ochoa for the top spot on Tuesday. Ochoa had sat atop the rankings since April 2007.

The rankings, first released in 2006, are based on tournament scores from the past two years.

Thirty-four of the top 100 golfers in the rankings are from South Korea, more than any other nation.
