Local Team Develops Super Antibody for Influenzas

A local team of researchers says it has developed a super antibody that can be used to treat the seasonal flu, H1N1 influenza and the bird flu.

The team, comprised of researchers from Severance Hospital and a local pharmaceutical company, announced Tuesday that it retrieved an antibody from the blood of a patient who fully recovered from H1N1 influenza and succeeded in developing a technology that mass produces the antibody.

The team said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed the antibody’s treatment effects.

The team said the antibody can be used to treat patients who are resistant to Tamiflu.

South Korea currently imports flu-treatment medications, including Tamiflu and Relenza.
