Icebreaker 'Araon' Arrives in Terra Nova Bay

The nation's first ice-breaking vessel, the "Araon," has arrived in Terra Nova Bay as part of a scouting mission to find a suitable location for Korea’s second scientific research station in Antarctica.

Despite snow and thick fog, the Araon arrived 750 meters off the coast of Terra Nova Bay at 11 a.m. Saturday, Korean standard time.

The survey team will also visit Italy’s base in Antarctica on Saturday.

The following day, it will start a four-day survey of potential research base sites.

The Araon will leave Antarctica on February eleventh and will arrive in New Zealand around February 20th.
