'Caffeine Slows Growth of Brain Cancer Cells'

A team of scientists says it has discovered that caffeine found in coffee and green tea has the ability to slow down the growth of brain cancer cells.

The team led by Doctor Lee Chang-joon of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology announced Monday that the recent finding was the result of a joint research project with experts from both home and abroad.

The team said that lab mice which consumed caffeine saw almost no spread of brain cancer cells, adding that the survival rates for the mice more than doubled after the caffeine was given to them.

The amount of caffeine that was used in the experiments was equivalent to two to five cups of coffee or green tea when applied to humans.

The recent finding was published in the U.S.-based Cancer Research journal.
