The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute says its high-performance multipurpose research reactor called “HANARO” has succeeded in producing cold neutrons for the first time in the nation’s history.

The institute made the announcement Tuesday, adding that it has completed the development of a cold-neutron research facility in HANARO and has also finished the creation of a fuel test loop.

As a result, HANARO, which was set up in 1995, has completed the process of becoming a true multifunctional research reactor.
