Argo Floats Placed in Yellow Sea, Pacific

A state agency has placed maritime monitoring devices in the Yellow Sea and the Pacific Ocean to survey climate change on the Korean Peninsula and in other parts of East Asia.

The National Institute of Meteorological Research says six Argo probes were placed in the Yellow Sea and six more near the Pacific equator to observe typhoon patterns and fluctuations in sea temperatures.

By the force of ocean currents, the floats will dive as deep as 800 meters below the surface of the Yellow Sea and two-thousand meters deep in the Pacific.

The real-time data retrieved will be used to monitor climate changes triggered by global warming and also for maritime forecasts.

The institute has participated in the international Argo project since 2001 and is currently operating 112 Argo probes.
