Russia Fails to Qualify for World Cup

Russia’s national soccer team has failed to win a ticket to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Led by coach Guus Hiddink, the Russian team lost to Slovenia 0-1 in a play-off held Thursday. Hiddink was the coach of the 2002 South Korean team that made it to the semifinals of the 2002 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Portugal won a ticket to the World Cup by defeating Bosnia Herzegovina 1-0.

Greece, France, Uruguay and Algeria also secured spots in next year’s cup.

A total of 32 countries will play in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
