The World Taekwondo Championships will open Wednesday in Copenhagen, Denmark, for a five day run.

About 1,000 competitors from 143 countries in eight weight divisions are expected.

The event will serve as a testing ground for the sport to strengthen its position as a global game. New systems to be implemented at the Copenhagen tournament seek to make the sport more interesting and remove disputes over referees' decisions.
