Korean Telescope Launched into Orbit

A South Korean-made "fast tracking" telescope has been successfully placed in the Earth's orbit.

The Science and Technology Ministry says the micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS) space telescope was included as part of Russia's Tatiana-2 satellite that was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on September 18th. The telescope was developed by a team at Ewha Womans University.

Russia says the satellite successfully entered orbit and has made its first contact with Earth.

For the next year, the telescope will track high-speed occurrences, such as lightning strikes, at an altitude of 800 kilometers.

Korean researchers expect the telescope will contribute to unveiling secrets related to particle movement.
