A South Korean discoverer of a comet is among the recipients of the 2009 Edgar Wilson Award, given by the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

The Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams, operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, announced this year’s five recipients including Dae-am Yi, the director of Yeongwol Insect Museum in Gangwon Province.

Yi reported his discovery of a comet in March. The comet was named Yi-Swan after its discoverer. He is the first Korean to discover a new comet.

The Edgar Wilson Award was established in 1999 and is given annually to amateur astronomers who have discovered new comets.
