Gov't Confirms 5pm Rocket Launch Time

The government has confirmed that the launch of the nation’s first space rocket will take place at five p.m. Tuesday.

Vice Minister of Education, Science and Technology Kim Jung-hyun held a news conference Tuesday at the Naro Space Center in Goheung, South Jeolla Province, and confirmed the launch time for the “Naro” rocket.

Kim said the launch time was finalized after reviewing the results of the launch’s final rehearsal and a Korea-Russia launch committee meeting as well as analyzing weather conditions.

The science ministry said that though current weather conditions meet the requirements for the rocket’s launch, it is closely watching the weather as cloudy skies are expected around the scheduled launch time.

The injection of fuel and oxidation agents is set to begin at 3 p.m. and the automatic countdown at 4:45 p.m. The first-stage engine will be ignited three-point-eight seconds before the launch of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-One.

An hour after the rocket lifts off, Minister of Education, Science and Technology Ahn Byong-man is expected to announce whether the launch was a success.
