US Media Praise Golfer Yang's Victory

U.S. media are praising South Korean golfer Yang Yong-eun for becoming the first Asian-born player to win a major PGA tour event on Sunday.

CNN noted Monday that Yang became the first to defeat Tiger Woods at a major in which Woods held a lead entering the last round. Yang toppled the mighty Tiger Woods by three strokes at the 91st PGA Championship held in the U.S. state of Minnesota on Sunday after firing a two-under par 70. He finished the tournament with an eight-under par 280.

Connell Barret, editor-at-large for Golf Magazine, told CNN that Yang’s victory was one of the top 20 greatest upsets ever seen in all of sports, calling Woods’ fall equivalent to “superman falling out of the sky.”

CNN quoted PGA President Jim Remy as saying that the back-nine showdown between Yang and Woods will be remembered as one of the greatest golf battles in the game. Remy added that Yang showed as much heart and talent on Sunday as one could ever hope to find. Remy said Yang will be a tremendous champion for The PGA of America.

Meanwhile, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press and Reuters covered Yang’s victory, saying the golfer, who hadn’t pick up a club until he was 19, had tamed Tiger Woods.
