Security Tightened for Space Rocket Launch

A joint security team went into alert on Monday, two days ahead of the nation’s first launch of a space rocket.

The 300-member team is comprised of antiterrorist agents, police, firefighters and medical personnel from 15 agencies. They are working around the clock to prevent a wide spectrum of contingencies, ranging from terror threats to fires.

On Monday, the team conducted a final joint exercise and checked all their response scenarios. Fire engines, helicopters, ambulances and detoxification vehicles are on standby around the space center.

Public access within three kilometers from the space center is strictly limited.

The launch of the Naro, or the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-One (KSLV-1), is scheduled to take place on Wednesday at the Naro Space Center in Goheung, South Jeolla Province.
