The International Olympic Committee’s executive board has proposed that golf and rugby be included on the list of official events for the 2016 Olympic Games.
The board made the proposal in a meeting in Berlin on Thursday, local time.
If the proposal is approved, it will be golf’s first inclusion in the Olympics since the 1904 St. Louis Olympics and rugby’s first appearance since the 1924 Paris Olympics.
In addition to the 26 core sports, seven sports --- baseball, golf, karate, roller sports, rugby, softball and squash --- were seeking to be included as Olympics events.
But the executive board decided to include only golf and rugby in the proposal, based on an expansive evaluation of the seven sports by the IOC’s Program Commission.
The proposal will be submitted to the general session of the IOC in Copenhagen in October for a final ruling.
