Written: 2009-08-04 13:38:26Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

A team of domestic researchers has found a biochemical mechanism related to diabetes patients' depression and weakening cognitive functions.

Medical professor Ryu In-kyun at Seoul National University and his team analyzed cerebral changes in 123 diabetes patients.

The team found that the concentration of neurotransmitter glutamate increases in the brains of diabetes patients, causing depression and a poor memory.

The findings were published in the latest edition of the U.S. Archives of General Psychiatry.
