Climber Ko Mi-young, who went missing while descending a mountain in the Himalayas, has been confirmed dead.
Ko’s team members who were conducting rescue operations by helicopter said they located Ko's body in a ravine some at three p.m. Sunday, Korean time.
Although the helicopter could not get close enough to administer a first-hand inspection of the body, Ko is likely to be dead given that she apparently fell off a ravine around 15-hundred meters deep and that blood marks were spotted around her head.
Rescue workers planned to launch operations around ten a.m. Monday but were not permitted to fly by the Pakistani government for safety reasons.
Meanwhile, the Korean Alpine Federation’s board of directors convened an emergency meeting and decided to set up a memorial altar for Ko in Seoul on Tuesday.
Ko is one of the few female climbers to conquer the 8,126-meter Nanga Parbat, the ninth-highest peak among the 14 tallest Himalayan mountains.
Ko was 41 years old.
