Seven felt earthquakes occurred on the Korean Peninsula in 2008, similar to most years.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), a total of 46 earthquakes over 2.0 on the Richter scale occurred on the Korean Peninsula last year. Eight earthquakes recorded over 3.0 on the scale while one was over 4.0.

The KMA said the total number of earthquakes have been on the rise since 1990, as more observation stations have been set up across the nation. However, it noted that the number of earthquakes registering over 3.0 on the Richter scale remained similar each year, staying near the average of ten.

The KMA added that only five earthquakes reaching over 5.0 on the Richter scale have been recorded since 1978.
